An utter void opens beneath them, the searing winds of damnation roaring through it. Hideous, ephemeral shapes furl through the vast nothingness, as the darkness coalesces into daemonic forms.

The screams of the massacre have silenced and the fallen lay as they were slain. In the total desolation only she moved. There, with his spine bent in the throes of death, she sees the motionless body of her lover tied in crucifixion to the visage of an enormous skull.

Before more daemon could arrive, she loosens his binds, lowers him onto her shoulder and carries him across the blood steamed landscape to the refuge of a cloistered hollow.
